Narwhals

Narwhals

Makayla Johnson, reporter

Narwhals: A small Arctic whale, with a tusk (NOT a horn like a unicorn!!) Their scientific name is Monodon Monoceros. You may be thinking of how people say narwhals are the “unicorns of the sea”; they really are not any type of unicorn or even related to them at all. I could argue that they are not for my whole life! 1648, the year they found the first sighting of this mysterious creature.

Narwhal fun fact time! Narwhals live to 50 years or older! Narwhals change color with age: newborns are a blueish gray color, juveniles (pre-teens and teens) are blue and black, adults are spotted with gray, and elders are nearly all white! Unlike other species of whales, narwhals stay in their habitats. Speaking of habitats narwhals live in Canada, Greenland, Russia, and Norway! A narwhal’s tusk can grow as long or longer than 10 ft. That’s what I call long!
