The History Behind Black History Month

Black History month started as Negro History week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson selected Negro History week, and now Black History Month, to take place in February because it marks the birthday of two important men who had great impact on African American history in our country, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

Frederick Douglass was an escaped slave who became a prominent activist author and public speaker. He became a leader in the abolitionist movement which sought to end the practice of slavery before and during the civil war.
